Building Safer Systems Through Awareness, Empathy, and Resilience.
Trauma-Informed Training for Justice and Correctional Professionals
Our trauma-informed training program is transforming how legal and correctional institutions engage with the human experience behind their work. Recently conducted in Freetown, Sierra Leone, these sessions brought together lawyers and senior correctional officers for a deep and practical exploration of trauma, mental wellness, and institutional leadership.
Delivered by A Girl At A Time (SL), these trainings were designed to provide participants with tools to recognize and respond to trauma in themselves, in their colleagues, and in the people they serve.
Why Trauma-Informed Training Matters
Professionals in legal and correctional environments are routinely exposed to emotionally intense, high-pressure situations. Without the right tools, these experiences can lead to:
Compassion fatigue and burnout
Decreased morale and job satisfaction
Reactive decision-making and strained institutional culture
By introducing trauma-informed practices, we help institutions shift from a system of reaction to one of understanding, resilience, and proactive care.
Highlights from Our Recent Training Sessions
Lawyers gained valuable insights into how trauma affects client behavior, legal outcomes, and their own advocacy strategies. Many expressed a renewed sense of empathy and responsibility in their roles.
Correctional officers and senior leadership engaged in open dialogue on the personal and organizational impact of trauma, leadership under pressure, and practical strategies for building healthier institutional environments.
"This is the kind of session that opens your eyes not just professionally, but personally. Every institution should prioritize this." — Senior Correctional Official
